Leon Hale

Recently, Leon Hale received the prestigious Lon Tinkle Award for Excellence Sustained Throughout a Career. The award is given by the Texas Institute of Letters, an organization comprising the state's most distinguished writers. Previous winners include novelists Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy, playwright Horton Foote and poet Vassar Miller. This is the latest award in a distinguished writing career that spans fifty plus years as a newspaper columnist in Houston.

Leon Hale is also the author of eleven books, including recent regional bestsellers, Supper Time and Home Spun. He has won awards for fiction and non-fiction from the Texas Institute of Letters, the Headliners Foundation, United Press International, and the Associated Press. Three times a week his popular personal essay-style column appears in the Houston Chronicle.

Hale is married and has two children, one stepson and three grandchildren. He divides his time between Houston, Washington County, Texas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
